ECM's License Compliance Engine takes input from multiple data sources—inventory, usage, procurement/financial systems, and applies ManageSoft's Application Recognition Library (ARL) to this set of data to determine what licensed applications are installed. The engine reconciles what you own against what you have installed. Complex license types are understood in conjunction with the computing environment (virtual machines, multi-core, etc.).
