Please send your suggestions for future newsletter content to: ddavis@VirtualizationAdmin.com 1. VMware Workstation 7, Fusion 3, and vSphere Update 1Thank you for reading issue #18 of our VirtualizationAdmin.com newsletter! Last month, we asked the question; "will Virtualization features in Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 make a difference?" There are some interesting features in there but this month I am going to re-visit what VMware's virtualization has to offer. This month, let's talk about what some new products have to offer. Toward the end of October and during this month of November, VMware made some new and exciting product features in the Workstation, Fusion, and vSphere lines. Let's cover them one at a time: NEW: Workstation 7 In the PC line of desktop virtualization, VMware Workstation is king. It offers the most functionality out of any desktop virtualization solution. At the end of October, VMware announced a major upgrade to Workstation - the new Workstation 7. There are many new features in VMware's Workstation 7, but, I am sure that the feature that people will find most interesting is that Workstation now supports Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (as guest VMs on Windows Server 2008 R2 and as host operating system on Windows 7). As for other features, there is a new virtual network editor which allows you to quickly pause and unpause VMs, virtual printers, and 3D graphics for guest VMs (such as Windows 7 Aero). For more information, check out the Workstation 7 product page and view this Free VMware Workstation 7 Fundamentals Training course. NEW: Fusion 3 Also at the end of October, VMware launched their latest desktop virtualization platform for Mac - VMware Fusion 3. This new version boasts over 50 new features and it sounds very impressive. Similar to Workstation 7, Fusion 3 supports Windows 7 as a guest VM with full Aero graphics support. Additionally, Fusion offers greater performance for those running Windows inside Fusion and 50 other features of Fusion 3. NEW: vSphere Update 1 Lastly, just this week (end of November), VMware announced that vSphere Update 1 is officially available. This encompasses both vCenter and ESX 4. The update actually offers a lot of new features. However, the most prominent one is that vSphere now supports Windows 7 as a guest VM and as a host for the vSphere Client. Additionally, vSphere Update 1 offers VMware View 4 support, the ability to use Windows 2008 R2 as a guest VM, enhanced Microsoft clustering support, and finally, improved vDS switch support. See the full list by following the Update 1 link above. Lots going on in VMware's product line! I hope you will try out the virtualization updates above! 5. Virtualization Admin Tip of the MonthWhat is one of the coolest things you can do with a virtual machine? This month I saw how you can run Google's Chrome operating system (OS) inside a virtual machine! It's really not that hard. To use Google Chrome OS as a VM, first download the pre-compiled VMDK here. Add a new VM to Workstation (I used the new WS7) with "Other 2.6 Linux 32-bit", 1GB of RAM, and the new VMDK as the disk file. You'll be running Google Chrome OS (called Chromium) inside a virtual machine in no time. Keep an eye out for my upcoming article on this topic! 6. Helpful Links
