Each month we will bring you interesting and helpful information on the world of Virtualization. We want to know what all *you* are interested in hearing about. Please send your suggestions for future newsletter content to: ddavis@VirtualizationAdmin.com 1. 2010 is here - Plan your Conferences!Thank you for reading issue #20 of our VirtualizationAdmin.com newsletter! Last month, we took a "virtual" tour of the 2009 Virtualization year and made some predictions for 2010. This month, I want to talk about the tech conferences (especially virtualization-related) that I am most excited about in 2010. Hopefully you find at least one of them interesting and can either attend or follow conference news online. If you do want to attend a conference in 2010, now is the time to start planning! Here are my top 4 conferences for 2010: VMware Partner Exchange (PEX) 2010 - Las Vegas, February 8-11 - you can only attend PEX if you are a VMware partner. I will be lucky to attend PEX for the first time this year and I am very excited for a few reasons: 1) the event will be more personal and intimate than VMworld so I hope to be able to spend more time with VMware representatives and vendors 2) the sessions are at a higher level than those at VMworld because these sessions are tailored toward systems engineers (SE) and not IT admins who are getting started with virtualization. I will let you know how PEX went next month and, of course, share what I have learned. TechMentor 2010 - Orlando, FL, March 8-12 - primarily a Microsoft-oriented conference, TechMentor will touch on the virtualization field and will try to focus on real-world tasks. TechMentor is a much smaller conference than TechEd and much more personal. I know a number of the speakers and hope to be able to attend. Included in the speaker list is Greg Shields, J. Peter Bruzzese, Don Jones, Mark Minasi, and Rick Vanover. TechEd North America 2010 - New Orleans, LA, June 7-10 - as Microsoft's premier North American conference, it is hard not to have interest in TechEd. Just as they do every other year, Microsoft should have other world-wide TechEd conferences around the world. I am excited to see what virtualization announcements will come out of TechEd! VMworld 2010 - September 2010 - currently, no information is posted about either of the 2010 VMworld conferences other than the month that they will happen. Still, I plan on attending VMworld 2010 and even hope to speak there. I doubt I will attend VMworld Europe 2010 in October as it is just a month later and it is unlikely that new announcements will be made there (and I will still be recovering from VMworld North America!) If you read this newsletter during VMworld 2009, you know that I will be posting lots of information about it. So what conferences are you going to attend? Did I miss an important conference? Do you think conferences are a waste of time? In any case, I want to hear what you think! Please feel free to write to me at ddavis@VirtualizationAdmin.com Thank you, Note to my readers: Besides reading our newsletter, I encourage you to stay up to date on the latest in Virtualization news by subscribing to the VirtualizationAdmin.com RSS Feed so make sure you have the VirtualizationAdmin.com RSS feeds configured in your RSS reader. 2. And here are 5 of the latest Microsoft tech videos: 5. Virtualization Admin Tip of the MonthI create a lot of articles and videos about virtualization. To do this, I have a lab with two VMware ESX Servers, a vCenter Server, Hyper-V server, Active Directory domain controller, and recording PCs. Recently, I posted a new video where I detail my lab equipment and even show a picture of it. Checkout this new video at: My Home VMware vSphere Lab. 6. Helpful Links
7. Ask David Davis, VCP, vExpertQuestion What are the top options for virtualizing desktop computers? Answer Once you have virtualized your servers (or at least started the process) you should consider virtualizing desktop computers. By doing this, you will gain the same benefits for your desktops that you gained for your servers when you opted to virtualize; lower cost, ease of administration, greater security, improved reliability, and tremendous flexibility. The top options for virtualizing desktops are:
Both of these are available in free evaluation versions at their respective links. VMware offers a VDI TCO calculator to calculate how much you can save by implementing desktop virtualization. If you are wondering why I did not list Microsoft's solution, I will point out that Microsoft does not have a desktop virtualization solution. The closest thing that they have is Remote Desktop Services (RDS) in Windows Server 2008, but that is really presentation virtualization (where users are sharing the same OS).
