Tip explains how to modify the default logging behavior of System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM).

You can tweak DPM log file settings by modifying several registry settings on the DPM Server. By default, DPM logs all errors and failures and the default log file size is 5 MB. You can change the default DPM logging behavior by modifying the following registry entries:

  • Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager
  • Entry: TraceLogLevel
  • Type: DWORD
  • Possible Values:

TRACE_ERROR - Logs all errors and failures - default setting

TRACE_DBG_ACTIVITY - Logs all activities such as start, cancel, end

TRACE_DBG_NORMAL - Logs activities considered important

TRACE_DBG_CRITICAL - Logs critical errors only and

TRACE_DBG_FATAL - Logs fatal errors such as task or job failures.

To increase the log file size, change value of TraceLogMaxSize registry entry.
